Debi Lewis: What Does it Mean to Be Jew-ish?

Thu, May 28 // 6:30 pm

How do we define ourselves as Jews? What are our core Jewish values? Who gets to say what and who is Jewish? This class will explore the history and traditions surrounding what roles young people play in the Jewish community, how this has changed over time, and what we see our role to be today. We will explore the beliefs and traditions of various Jewish Sects—Orthodox, Chabad, Kabalistic, Sephardic vs Ashkenazi—with an aim at better understanding and answering the question: Which Jew are you?

Deborah Lewis is a Rabbinical Student as well as an IT Professional. After working in the financial industry for most of her career she decided to exchange the suit for a kippah and a squint (the Talmud is not written in large letters.)

She has been the Clinical Chaplaincy Intern for the Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Barbara for the past two years, where she has focused on reaching out and providing visitors to those that can benefit from community and connection.

She also serves as the conversion coordinator at Congregation B’nai B'rith where she teaches a yearlong Practical Judaism Class, for all who are interested in learning more about Judaism as well as teaching a course on Jewish Ethics for the Florence Melton School of Adult Education. She looks forward G-d willing to be ordained in May 2021.
